![]() ![]() Online recommendations led me to the the good old Pignose and to my delight this simplest of amps with just one on-off/volume-distortion knob delivered just what I was looking for. The novelty and convenience of built in effects quickly became redundant as I had already acquired my own preferred effect pedals. With both amps I felt that digital amp modelling was a subtractive process. Eventually I'd settle on some amp/setting for a while but I was never quite happy. The Vox DA-5 with it's larger speaker sounded fuller/better but I still got the nasty overtones and I found myself spending hours fiddling with the controls to find the "best" tone. I'd heard good things about the Microcube but I found it to sound rather boxy and with unpleasant distortion overtones. My experience searching for the perfect portable harp amp brought me to a similar conclusion as you regarding excessive sounds and effects. I had presumed it would be too bright and "chimey" - Harmonica amps are often configured/modded to knock back the treble and fill out the bottom end. Vox retired the P15R Pathfinder Reverb in January 2013 and these amps almost immediately became a sought after collectible as soon as they were discontinued. To me it sounds better than the Vox tube amps of the same size. These Pathfinders are really great little amps! A lot of people share my opinion that this may be the finest solid state amp that Vox has ever produced, especially for recording. Everything is stock, including the original 8" speaker. It is amazingly loud for its size and sounds way better than it has any right to. The reverb, the tremolo, everything sounds awesome. Original owner, home use only!
